Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBO)
HBO has been used as medical foprm of treatment for over 50 years. In Finland treatment has been given in Turku University Hospital since 1969 and in private clinic, Medioxygen since 1999. Patients requiring intensive care are only treated in Turku.
Normal hyperbaric session starts with a pressurization of the hyperbaric chamber with air to 2.4 ATA (Absolute Atmospheric pressure) equaling 14 metres diving depth in water. Patient then breathes 100% oxygen through a tight-fitting mask or hood for 90 minutes. These hyperbaric sessions are repeated 5 days a week up to 20-40 times.
More information about hyperbaric medicine.
Diving emergencies
Underwater environment causes special risks and problems to divers. Pressure changes, gas behavior in pressure, temperature, darkness, rough waters and other environmental hazards may cause a danger to divers. Good diving training and a good physical health will lessen the risks to get in to accidents due to environmental circumstances.

Patient with DCS always needs emergency decompression treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
The faster the symptoms occur after surfacing, the more severe the DCS and the more urgent the need for treatment. Transport vehicle and urgency is decided according to patient symptoms. If patient gets in to treatment in time, the prognosis is good.
